Agenda Item # 7
Columbus Consolidated Government
Council Meeting
06/14/2011
Agenda Report # 649
TO: Mayor and Council
SUBJECT: Sidewalk Width Variance-Habitat for Humanity
INITIATED BY: Engineering
Recommendation: Approval is requested of a variance to Section 8.8.14.A of the
Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) requiring the replacement of existing
sidewalk to a minimum width of 4 feet for Habitat for Humanity to replace
existing sidewalk at 3 feet in the Eastview Neighborhood.
Background: Habitat for Humanity is completing the construction of seven homes
in the Eastview Neighborhood on Bragg Smith Street. Section 8.8.14.A of the
UDO requires the replacement of existing sidewalk to a width of no less than 4
feet.
Analysis: Habitat for Humanity has requested a variance from the required 4
ft. to 3ft. in order to match the existing sidewalk in the area. The City's
current standard for construction of new sidewalk is 5 feet in order to be in
compliance with ADA regulations.
Financial Considerations: There are no current expense to the City. Habitat
for Humanity will be responsible for the construction of the sidewalk.
Projected Annual Fiscal Impact Statement: No projected fiscal impact other
than normal maintenance in future years.
Legal Considerations: Variances to Section 8.8.14.A requires Council approval.
Recommendations/ Actions: Approve resolution granting a variance to Section
8.8.14.A of the Unified Development Ordinance requiring the replacement of
existing sidewalk to a width of no less than 4 feet in order for Habitat for
Humanity to replace existing sidewalk at 3 feet in the Eastview Neighborhood.
