Council Meeting

Agenda Report #

TO: Mayor and Council

SUBJECT: City Code Revision - Official Street Map

INITIATED BY: Engineering

Recommendation: Approve the attached ordinance revising City Code

Section 18-1. Street map - Adoption; effect and Section 18-2 Same - Where

displayed; signing. to define that all streets and roads of the "Official

Street Map, City of Columbus, Georgia" are County streets and roads of Muscogee

County for the purpose of conforming to Georgia Code Section 32-4-41,

paragraph (4).

Background: The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is required

to update all Georgia County Maps every five years in accordance with Georgia

Code Section 32-4-2. Official map, list, and records; rules and regulations.

The Official Georgia County maps that are prepared by the DOT only show "County

street networks" during which process most streets within the urban boundary of

Muscogee County were not shown. The DOT sent us a letter dated September 30,

2009 asking the City to designate all streets and roads as County roads to be

shown on the DOT Muscogee County Map.

Analysis: Most of Georgia's consolidated City/County governments have

designated all streets and roads as County roads in order to have them shown on

the DOT County Map. In consultation with the City Attorney, the Engineering

Department recommends simply rewording the two City Code sections described

above to describe the City's "Official Street Map, Consolidated Government of

Columbus, Georgia, is hereby adopted as the official street map for Columbus -

Muscogee County, Georgia".

Financial Considerations: There are no financial expenses incurred by the City

for this action.

Legal Considerations: Revising the City Code requires Council approval.

Recommendations/ Actions: Approve the revised City Code to Section 18-1.

Official Street Map - Adoption; effect. and Section 18-2. Official Street Map

- Where displayed.
