Columbus Public Library Dedicates State-of-the-Art Recording Studio to Benefit
the Visually Impaired
First of its kind in the State of Georgia
The Chattahoochee Valley Libraries and Country?s Barbecue would like to invite
the public to the dedication of a state-of-the-art sound proof recording studio
for the visually impaired. The studio was purchased with funds from the
Midnight Express Run held every year by Country?s Barbecue in support of the
blind and visually impaired. The dedication will take place at the Columbus
Public Library on Macon Road at 5:30pm on Monday, August 23, 2010. ?We are
so excited about our partnership with the Library and the opportunity to take
the lead in the state of Georgia on a project of this caliber and importance,?
says Scott Ressmeyer, Race Chair. ?This studio will be used to record books,
local periodicals and much more for the visually impaired in our community.?
National Library Service (NLS) specifications have been closely observed by
Eckel Industries, the company who custom designed the sound proof booth. The
booth is complete with special equipment and digital recording software
designed for Network Libraries such as the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries?
CLASS (Columbus Library for Accessible Services) Program.
?Because the Library has been a center for personal and community development
for over 50 years, and plays a critical role in providing unique services to
the community, it was a natural fit to house the studio here,? said Claudya
Muller, Library Director. The recording studio will allow persons who are
blind or visually impaired to have access to local history books and other
Georgia-specific materials which are now only available in print. Volunteers
will be trained as reviewers, monitors and narrators to work as part of the
?recording team? under the guidance of Library staff to produce audio books and
other materials for the Columbus community.
The 30th running of the Midnight Express Run will take place on Saturday,
August 28th at midnight and begins and ends at Country?s Barbecue on Mercury
Drive. This year the race will feature a simulcast and run in Iraq with the
3rd Brigade from Fort Benning. For more information on how you can
participate, visit http://www.countrysbarbeque.com/midnight-express/.
