Agenda Item # 2
Columbus Consolidated Government
Council Meeting
07/13/2010
Agenda Report # 522
TO: Mayor and Council
SUBJECT: State Justice Institute Grant
INITIATED BY: City Manager's Office
Recommendation: Approval is requested to submit an application and accept, if
awarded, a grant from the State Justice Institute in the amount of $50,000, or
as otherwise awarded, for funding a Courts Assessment Project, with a local
match requirement of $25,000, of which $5,000 must be cash, to be provided from
the General Fund, and the remainder will be in-kind, and to amend the
Multi-Governmental Fund by the amount of the award.
Background: The State Justice Institute was established by the State Justice
Act of 1984 to improve the administration of justice in the state courts of the
United States. Technical Assistance Grants are intended to provide state or
local courts with sufficient support to obtain expert assistance to diagnose a
problem, develop a response to that problem, and implement any needed changes.
Analysis: The purpose of this project is to access operations related to case
management and the impact of a new Army division moving to the area to be
conducted for the Superior Court Judges and the Office of the Clerk of Superior
Court. The assessment is vital to the judicial branch's ability to store and
report information and will contribute to improved justice coordination,
responsiveness, cost reduction and quality of internal court processes.
Financial Considerations: The amount of the grant will be $50,000, or as
otherwise awarded. The city will be obligated for a $5,000 cash match and a
$20,000 in-kind match.
Legal Considerations: The city is eligible to apply for this grant. If
awarded and accepted, the city will be bound by the terms and conditions of the
grant contract.
Recommendations/Actions: Authorize the City Manager or his designee to apply
for and accept, if awarded, this grant, and to amend the Multi-Governmental
Fund by the amount of the award.
