WHEREAS, the U.S. Army has released a final Programmatic Environmental
Assessment which sets criteria to determine whether the 3rd Armored Brigade
Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, will be cut or remain at Fort Benning,
Georgia;
WHEREAS, approximately 7,100 jobs are at stake, including 3,900 soldiers and
3,200 civilians workers; the total rises to 17,800 including spouses and
dependents;
WHEREAS, the Army will consider many factors before a decision is made on the
3rd Brigade, including environmental issues, the socioeconomic impact on
employment and population, costs, and soldier and family quality of life;
WHEREAS, the projected economic impact of a loss of these workers is $342
million in yearly income and nearly $404 million in annual sales for the
region, according to the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce;
WHEREAS, this Council strongly opposes any effort to reduce the strength of the
3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team at Fort Benning and urge all Columbus citizens
and other interested persons to contact their Congressional Representatives to
oppose such a measure;
WHEREAS, comments in opposition to such a reduction may also be made to USAEC

NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby express our strong opposition to any effort to reduce the strength of
the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team at Fort Benning and urge all Columbus
citizens and other interested persons to contact their Congressional
Representatives to oppose such a measure. Let a copy of this resolution be
forwarded to our local congressional delegation and to USAEC Attention:
