THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
October 28, 2008
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Nancy Wilkeson, Richard Hagler, Floyd
Washington, Aubry Burt, Rudy Allen and Rhudine Nelson. Rev. Hill, Michael
Silverstein and Carl Williams had an excused absence. Staff members present
were John Milam and Steve Brown.
Minutes of the September 23, 2008 meeting were approved as presented. Motion
made by Aubry Burt and seconded by Rhudine Nelson.
Old Business
Mr. Milam reported that the raises took effect.
The merchandise that was stolen from the pro shop last month has not been paid
for yet; however payment in full is expected in the near future.
New Business
Bull Creek maintenance department will have a sand bin constructed off the
ground to keep the sand from being contaminated and a storage bin to hold
fertilizer. Steve Brown will be able to purchased fertilizer in the future at a
reduce rate (bulk) now that he has a place to store it. Paid for with SPLOST
funds.
Superintendent Report by Steve Brown
The tees, old practice green, old chipping green and driving range tees have
been over seeded. Dead tree removal, bunker work and sod work have begun. The
edging of the cart paths has begun. Sod repair on #1 east was completed. When
the greens begin to change color because of the cold weather, iron will be
applied to the greens.
Nancy Wilkeson asked Steve Brown to look into the severe ?drop-off? areas by
some cart paths, especially 15 west near the green. These areas have been
eroding over time from rain water run-offs. The cart wash area needs a screen
to stop the grass and debris from clogging the drain. Mr. Milam said one has
been ordered.

Programming:
Fall Middle School season is finishing up in the next two weeks.
- This past Saturday, 60 children competed for the "C" and "B" team
championships at Godwin Creek.
- This coming Saturday (11/1), approximately 80 children will compete in the
JV and Varsity Championships at Godwin Creek. - Other awards are: Male and
Female player of the year; "Living the Values" award for one person from the
whole league; and "Living the Values" awards for a player from each school.
- The grand finale will be the following Saturday and Sunday (11/8 - 11/9) when
the top sixteen players from the league will play in a sweet sixteen match play
tournament at Godwin Creek.
- Thank you to Neill Hatcher and his board/committee for another successful
season.
- Without economical course access, this league would not exist. A big
"Thank you" to the following courses:
Bull Creek
Lakewood
Ft. Benning
Red Oak
Godwin Creek
- "The First Tee" classes will cut back some during the week as a
result of the time change. Classes continue for the home school groups that
meet earlier in the day as well as the Saturday classes.
Course:
Godwin Creek is in good condition. We are making every effort to
contain costs without having a negative affect on the course.
- We over-seeded the tees last week.
- As the temperature cools, we will be painting the greens.
As a result, we have recently increased our fees for daily play to help off-set
some of that cost. We still believe that our fees are competitive, and we hope
that our patrons agree. We want everyone to know that when they play at Godwin
Creek, they not only can enjoy a challenging short course, but can get a good
feeling knowing that what they paid to play is helping support youth golf in
our community.
Financial:
As noted last month, we recently received a donation that is earmarked for new
carpet. Before we install the carpet, we want to paint. Thank you to John
Milam and the Golf Authority for arranging for the painting.
As typical this time of year, the income has slowed. Contributions have been
slow too. As a result, we have recently increased our fees for daily play to
help off-set some of that cost. We still believe that our fees are
competitive, and we hope that our patrons agree. We want everyone to know that
when they play at Godwin Creek, they not only can enjoy a challenging short
course, but can get a good feeling knowing that what they paid to play is
helping support youth golf in our community.
In an effort to raise additional funds, we are offering a annual junior
membership for $129.00, and we are considering offering a limited access senior
membership for a very good price. Since our course is the hub for junior golf,
the proposed senior membership would be for times when juniors are in school.
If approved by our board, such membership would be:
August 15 - May 15 (nine months)
Weekdays (M-F) before 2:00 p.m.

Director of Golf
Bull Creek and Oxbow Creek revenues have increased significantly from September
compared to the same time last year. The revenues through October 21st are
slightly higher at both courses. Bull Creek looks that it will have a very
good year and Oxbow Creek is holding its own. Expenses for Bull Creek are
approximately $100,000 per month and that was the same cost to run the course
nine years ago.
The prison guard accused of sexual misconduct with an inmate at Bull Creek last
April received a 180-days sentence and five years probation.
Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day fall two days before the scheduled meetings
of the Golf Authority. If there is no pressing business at that time, we will
forgo those meetings. Mr. Hagler and Mr. Milam will keep the Board informed.
Richard Hagler adjourned the meeting at 4:17 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Secretary
