SUBJECT: Airport Commission Appointments
In response to a question from Councilor Thomas regarding appointments to the
Airport Commission, the constitutional amendment that created the Airport
Commission specifies that the Airport Commission shall make recommendations to
the members of Council. According to Constitutional Amendment, Article 5, Sec.
4, Georgia Law, 1968 ?All members appointed after the first five members are
named must first be recommended for appointment by the Airport Commission to
the Board of Commissioners,?? However, the Council could reject any or all of
the nominees causing the Airport Commission to submit another name or names
until the Council approves a nominee.
After conferring with Assistant City Attorney Sheftall, she advised that there
have not been any amendments to this constitutional amendment with the
exception of changes to certain terminology, for example; The Muscogee County
Airport Commission was changed to Columbus Airport Commission.
Therefore, the Airport Commission must submit nominees for board vacancies and
term expirations to the members of Council and the Council confirms a nominee.
A copy of the constitutional amendment creating the Airport Commission and the
Code of Ordinance amendment are provided for your perusal.
Please advise if there are any further questions.
