THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
January 23, 2007
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Floyd Washington, Nancy Wilkeson,
Donald Clack, June Holder, Richard Hagler, Aubry Burt and Willie Hill. Staff
members present were John Milam and Steve Brown. Michael Silverstein had an
excused absence. Nan Hopkins had an unexcused absence.
Minutes of the October 24, 2006 meeting were approved as presented. Motion
made by Donald Clack and seconded by June Holder.
Old Business
Columbus State University and Coach Mark Immelman are in the process of
renewing their lease.
New Business
The tee sign legends are up for renewal. If all existing markers have
advertising displayed, Bull Creek will make $50,000.
Mrs. Cheryl Grimes (bookkeeper for Bull Creek and Oxbow Creek) will retire in
March 2007. Michael Silverstein has narrowed the search down to four resumes
and will interview those applicants. February 15th should be the start date
for the new bookkeeper.
Superintendent Report by Steve Brown
A large plaque in memory of Bill ?Drummo? Daniels was donated to Bull Creek
Golf Course. Bull Creek authority does not want to create a memoriam for this
and any future donation; instead Steve Brown and John Milam will accept
donations (money) to purchase plants, i.e. (azaleas, tea olives, crepe myrtles
or any other flowering plant or tree, etc) to be planted at their discretion.
They want to be sure that adequate watering is available when planting and the
plants will enhance the aesthetic beauty of Bull Creek. A small bronze plaque
?in memory of? could be located near the plantings (will also be donated).
June Holder suggested that benches with ?in memory of? plaques should be
approved. All suggestions will be decided by John & Steve.
Steve?s crew has been working on the following: under brushing along the lake
banks and wooded areas, removal of dead trees, trimming of trees, edging the
bunkers and painting inside of restrooms on the course. Eight fairways were
sprayed for weed control, due to warm temperatures the remaining fairways will
be sprayed at a later date. A grinding machine is needed to sharpen the
blades. We spend approximately $3600 per year to sharpen blades for Bull Creek
and Oxbow Creek. A used grinding machine has become available for $5,000 (a
new grinding machine costs $20,000). Our mechanic will be able to do the
work. Mr. Milam will find the funds available to purchase this machine. It
will pay for itself in less than two years.
The repair of the creek bank on 3 West is planned. Steve has still not filled
the jobs of irrigation technician and prison labor foreman. Mr. Robert Francis
has been offered a raise to return to Bull Creek. He is considering his
options.
Godwin Creek
The course is in great shape and doing well financially.
Director of Golf
Bull Creek?s revenue from November 2006 through mid-January 2007 is
significantly higher with the warm temperatures. Oxbow Creek is slightly
higher. The snack bar at Bull Creek had income of $8500 in the last few months
and has $4000 in inventory.
June Holder asked Mr. Milam about yardage markers. Currently on the courses,
the 100 yard, 150 yard and 200 yard markers are in place. The yardage markers
on the east course that were glued on the sprinkler heads did not adhere and
have not been replaced.
Nancy Wilkeson asked the authority members if we should move the meeting to
another day so they do not conflict with the Thanksgiving and Christmas
holidays. Mr. Hagler stated that in the October 2007 meeting, we will decide
if those holidays conflict with the regular scheduled meetings. Nancy also
brought up the problem with single players and twosomes. Since we are a public
course, golfers cannot be turned away. The starter will try to pair-up players
before they tee off.
Richard Hagler adjourned the meeting at 4:36 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Secretary
