Columbus Consolidated Government

Council Meeting

09/26/2017

Agenda Report # 38

TO: Mayor and Council

SUBJECT: Donations for Veteran?s Memorial Columbarium

INITIATED BY: Public Works

Recommendation: Approval is requested to accept donations of cash for the

construction, maintenance, and operations of a Veteran?s columbarium as well as

the purchase of urns for indigent veterans.

Background: Since the construction of the columbarium for indigents two years

ago, the Cemetery Division has interred roughly 40 indigent veterans? ashes in

East Porterdale without ceremony. Public Works has now designed a columbarium,

to be constructed in Riverdale Cemetery, for the cremains of veterans. This

columbarium will be constructed with a combination of in house labor and

volunteer labor as well as some material from public works from operational

supplies as well as materials donated for use at the columbarium

Analysis: Many of our indigent cremations are for veterans.

Financial Considerations: This will be at no cost to the City other than some

operational supplies. All else will be funded through private donations.

Legal Considerations: Council must approve the acceptance of these donations.

Recommendations/Actions: Approval is requested to accept donations for the

Veteran?s columbarium and establishment of a special account for this purpose.
