A RESOLUTION
A Resolution amending the policy relating to the handling of applications
for the temporary closing of a public street or right-of-way.
WHEREAS, the Council of Columbus, Georgia continues to receive numerous
applications to temporarily close a public street or right-of-way and the
Council desires to amend the policy established by Resolution No. 248-73.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
Resolution No. 248-73 is hereby rescinded and a new resolution is
hereby substituted to read as follows:
1.
The form for ?Application to Close Public Thoroughfare? on file in the
Columbus Police Department shall continue to be used by any applicant desiring
to temporarily close a public street or right-of-way.
2.
That persons, firms, businesses or other organizations desiring the
temporary closure of a public street or right-of-way shall make application to
the Chief of Police at least thirty (30) days prior to the date requested for
temporary closure. The Chief of Police shall obtain, or cause to be obtained,
all data required on said application form. The Chief of Police, after
consultation with the Traffic Engineer, shall approve or deny the application
and shall sign and date the application. The Chief of Police shall forward a
copy of the approval or denial of the application to the Clerk of Council for
submission to the Columbus Council at its next regular meeting. If the Chief of
Police has approved the application, the Chief of Police or his designee shall,
as soon as practical thereafter, notify the applicant in writing of such
approval.

If the Chief of Police has denied the application, the Columbus Council
shall affirm, modify or reverse the action of the Chief of Police at its next
regular meeting. The Clerk of Council shall, as soon as practical thereafter,
notify the applicant in writing of the Council action.
4.
Upon approval of an application by the Chief of Police or Columbus
Council, the Clerk of Council shall, as soon as practical thereafter, notify
the following departments: Columbus Fire and EMS Department, Public Services
Department, Traffic Engineer, and City Manager. The Clerk of Council shall
continue to give official notice of any such closure to the public as provided
by Columbus Code Section 18-2.2.
