A RESOLUTION
No.
WHEREAS, Mr. Sam M. Wellborn represents the 8th Congressional District, which
includes Columbus, Georgia, on the State Transportation Board;
WHEREAS, thanks to his leadership on the State Transportation Board, Columbus
has received millions of dollars to support projects such as the RiverWalk,
streetscapes, and many other infrastructure and highway improvements;
WHEREAS, Mr. Wellborn graduated from the University of Georgia (B.A.
Degree 1964), the Georgia Banking School in Athens, Georgia and the
Manufacturers Hanover Trust School in New York, New York;
WHEREAS, he joined Columbus Bank and Trust Company in 1965 and retired as
Chairman and CEO of Synovus Foundation, an affiliate of Synovus Financial Corp.;
WHEREAS, he served in the Georgia Air National Guard, serves on the boards of
the Bradley-Turner Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, The American Cancer
Society, and the Georgia Golf Association Foundation and served as past chair
of the Gateways Foundation, Greater Columbus, Georgia Chamber of Commerce;
WHEREAS, he has also been recognized as the American Cancer Society Crystal
Ball Honoree, 1991; American Heart Association Heart Gala Honoree, 1995; UGA
Terry School of Business Distinguished Alumni Award, 1995; Synovus Hall of
Fame, 1996; Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award, and as Honorary
Co-Chairman of Columbus Unity Week, 1998;
WHEREAS, Mr. Wellborn?s contributions to the Columbus community are worthy of
special recognition by this Council.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby commend and express our deep appreciation to Mr. Sam M. Wellborn for
his many contributions to the Columbus community, the State of Georgia and to
his country. Columbus is proud of his accomplishments and we wish him
every success in the future. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr.
Sam M. Wellborn.
