Agenda Item # 5
Columbus Consolidated Government
Council Meeting
03/12/2013
Agenda Report # 40
TO: Mayor and Council
SUBJECT: Acquisition of 525 Tenth Avenue, Tax Map Number 020-008-007
INITIATED BY: Amy Carbajal, Community Reinvestment Department
Recommendation: Approval is requested to purchase of .98+/- acres of property
at 525 Tenth Avenue to develop a storage facility for the Columbus Police
Department. (see attached map)
Background: Currently, the Police Department utilizes the top floor of
the Public Safety Parking Garage to store confiscated vehicles. This forces
employees to park in the surface parking lot and leaves very little to no
parking for citizens. They have also exhausted storage space for evidence in
the Public Safety building. The Police Department has funds budgeted to
purchase a warehouse building to store confiscated vehicles and evidence. The
Goodwill Recycling Center offers a location in close proximity to the Public
Safety Center that can store vehicles indoors as well as outdoors. The
building will need repairs which have been inspected and an estimate of those
repairs is attached for your review. The Police Department would also like to
construct the interior space for some offices. An estimate of the cost of
those improvements is also attached for your review. The acquisition price is
$200,000.
Analysis: Purchasing this building will allow the Public Safety parking to be
utilized as was originally intended. The cost of this building is
significantly less than other similar buildings that have been considered.
Financial Considerations: The Police Department will use LOST funds to
acquire, rehabilitate and renovate the interior.
Projected Annual Fiscal Impact Statement: This building is currently owned by
a non-profit entity, therefore no additional taxes will be lost due to the
City's acquisition.
Legal Considerations: All real estate acquisitions must be approved by Council
Resolution.
Recommendations/ Actions: Approve the purchase of .98+/- acres of property at
525 Tenth Avenue for the purpose of developing a storage facility for the
Columbus Police Department.
