Summary of Transportation Projects

Veteran?s Parkway Widening - The City is proceeding with a project to widen

Veterans Parkway to three lanes (from Moon/Williams to just north of the

elementary school's new entrance) in order to accommodate the additional

traffic expected from the opening of the new Northside Elementary School in

August. Plans should be finalized by the end of March and submitted to GDOT

for approval. Upon receiving that approval, the City will work the MCSD's

contractor to widen this road. The use of the MCSD contractor for this project

will require a Memorandum of Understanding between the City and MCSD. GDOT is

expected to begin construction of the full four-lane road with a center turn

lane by April of 2007, with a completion date of late 2008.

Williams Road Left Turn Lane - The City's previous request to have a left turn

signal for east bound traffic on Williams to the north bound lane of Veteran's

was not approved by GDOT. Traffic Engineering is in the process of making an

additional request to have the left turn signal approved. Last week the

Traffic Engineering completed a Turning Movement Count Study of the

intersection and this week they are performing a Time Delay Study. The results

of both studies will be used to provide further justification for the left turn

signal at the intersection. Upon completion of the study this week the new

request will be submitted to GDOT. According to Ron Hamlett, City Traffic

Engineer the amount of time to process such a request through GDOT varies

significantly. A response to the request could be received within 60 days but

previous requests have taken much longer.

American Way/Williams Road Connector Road - City staff has met with

representatives of the Woodruff Company and the school district, to determine

if a roadway could be built from American Way, into the new PUD. The Woodruff

Company has been extremely helpful and willing to allow such a connection. It

will require the redesign of their proposed roadway onto school property, and

then connecting the roadway just west of the City's fire station. Engineers

for the Woodruff Company are working on the design now. Because of the rock

and steep terrain in the area, an initial estimate of $500,000 was given for

the construction costs. A better estimate of the construction cost will be

available once the engineering has been completed. This project may qualify

for partial GDOT funding (60% City, 40% GDOT) under a County Contract.

Schomburg Road Elementary Road Improvements ? City staff has been working with

representatives from the school district on the preliminary design for road

improvements necessary for the new elementary school. According to Ron

Hamlett, City Traffic Engineer, the recommended design will call for an

additional south bound lane from N. Stadium Dr. to the west bound J.R. Allen

ramp. Additional improvements will be needed at the Schomburg/N. Stadium Drive

intersection to include a turn lane on Schomburg and a third lane on N.

Stadium. The majority of this work may qualify partial GDOT funding (60%

City, 40% GDOT) under a County Contract.
