A RESOLUTION
No.
WHEREAS, Retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Lonnie Jackson died on
September 21, 2006 at his home in Columbus;
WHEREAS, Sgt. Jackson was the founder and leader of the Combined
Communities of Southeast Columbus which has benefited over 23,000 students
through its tutorial programs;
WHEREAS, his anti-litter campaigns were also legendary across Columbus and the
State of Georgia;
WHEREAS, in 1993, he received The President?s Volunteer Action Award from
President Bill Clinton;
WHEREAS, he was also honored with the Jefferson Award for Public Service to
America and the Judge Aaron Cohn Service Award;
WHEREAS, he co-founded the committee that established the Vietnam veterans
Memorial Park and also received the Military Order of St. Francis which
recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Infantry;
WHEREAS, Sergeant Jackson is survived by his wife, Bettye, daughter Lonya
Jackson-Sarden, grandson Devarious Jackson, and half-brother Turner Jackson.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby express our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the
family of Retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Lonnie Jackson. His service to
the Columbus community, the State of Georgia and his country will long be
remembered. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of
Sergeant Lonnie Jackson.
