THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
March 28, 2006
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Chairman Richard Hagler, Earl Bagley,
Floyd Washington, Willie Hill, Nancy Wilkeson, Donald Clack, Michael
Silverstein and June Holder. Rhudine Nelson had an excused absence. Staff
members present were John Milam and Steve Brown.
Minutes of the February 28, 2006 meeting were approved as presented. Motion
made by June Holder and seconded by Michael Silverstein.
Old Business
A memorandum was sent to the City letting them know about the Authority?s
approval of a plaque. This plaque will be installed at Oxbow Creek on a
concrete pedestal near the driving range honoring Mr. Howard Pitts.
Superintendent Report by Steve Brown
The greens took a set back due to the cold weather over this past weekend. The
fairways at Bull Creek have been sprayed for pre-emergence herbicide and
fertilizer will be applied during April. The Oxbow Creek will finish their
spraying this week. The tee boxes will be sprayed to remove the rye grass
within the next three weeks.
Drainage pipe has been installed on the left side of the cart path on 15 East.
We have ordered 6,000 sq. feet of Emerald Zoysia and 4,000 sq. feet of Bermuda
grass to be installed in the next two days. Most of the Zoysia grass will be
installed on 3 West and the remaining sod will be installed in the bare areas
(near 3 West green curb, 5 West fairway, 10 East and 12 East). The wood line
areas that were cleared over the winter will be sprayed with herbicide. The
sand bunkers are still pending. Steve is replacing the fiberglass sand rakes
with wooden rakes. The fiberglass rakes only last several years. The
fiberglass rakes will be painted and used as hazard stakes.
The concrete should be poured next week for the vending machines. The rental
mowing equipment is expected to arrive April 3, 2006.
The City has completed its work on the eroded areas (bridges) at Oxbow Creek
from the latest storm. A better outlet is needed for the excess rain run-off.
Godwin Creek
No financial report was available. The First Tee did receive a $30,000 grant
from the USGA. The First Tee is looking for volunteers for both coaching and
behind the counter. They would also like to replace the carpet in the pro shop
and get mulch for the picnic area before the representatives from the First Tee
National arrive in May. The next clinic session begins April 15, 2006.
New Business
Nancy Wilkeson brought up the matter of people going on the course to practice
instead of using the practice facilities. Mr. Milam will look into this
matter. Nancy requested that the sign offering a discount for Active Duty
Military be relocated to the front office. Please specify that the rate is good
for weekday play only.
Director of Golf
Bull Creek?s revenues are slightly higher than compared to that of March 2005.
The cool temperatures and rain has kept the figures pretty dismal during the
month of February for both Bull Creek and Oxbow Creek. With warmer weather
predicted, revenues should pick up.
Mr. Milam received a memorandum from the City Manager removing the capital from
Bull Creek and Oxbow?s budgets for FY07. The Golf Authority would like to meet
with the City Council during a work session to go over the possibilities on how
to handle the situation at Oxbow Creek. We feel that an additional 9 holes
would increase revenue and eventually pay for it. Oxbow Creek has the best
practice facilities locally. Another suggestion is with the arrival of 40,000
soldiers/families at Fort Benning, maybe their golf courses could join rank
with Oxbow Creek.
Chairman, Richard Hagler adjourned the meeting at 4:32 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Secretary
