Columbus Consolidated Government
Referrals From Mayor and Council-10/31/2006
Subject Heath Drive
Description Have the staff to do some research and provide a report as to why
there were no sidewalks put on Heath Drive when we did the sidewalk project; as
there are a lot of children that walk to school from their driveway to River
Road. Let?s determine if we can have sidewalks put in on this street. (Request
of Councilor McDaniel)

Response We installed about 6000 feet of sidewalks on River Road around River
Road Elem School except a section of less than 400 feet. This was due to the
steep slope of the shoulder of the road. It would have cost several time the
cost of the sidewalk to construct the necessary retaining wall. This section
was serving only five houses and would not have provided connection to another
neighborhood since the Columbus Water Works is located on the northern end of
this section. - DN
11/06/06 - The 1993 SPLOST included a $5 million sidewalk project to install 30
miles of sidewalk. The project summary shows $4,133,984 expended with a total
of 50 miles of sidewalk installed. The remainder of the funds were reallocated
to other SPLOST projects. The Engineering Department has received numerous
requests for additional sidewalks throughout the community. The School
District has also constructed several new elementary schools since the original
1993 SPLOST sidewalk project. Based on these requests and the construction of
additional schools, the feasibility of funding and implementing another
sidewalk project should be examined.
