Columbus Consolidated Government
Council Memorandum
TO: Mayor and Councilors DATE: 02/26/2013
THRU: Isaiah Hugley, City Manager
FROM: Donna W. Newman, Director of Engineering SUBJECT: Cussetta Road/Old
Cusseta Road Intersection Improvements
Staff has received numerous complaints through the years about the
intersection of Cusseta Road and Old Cusseta Road and the drainage ditch that
runs parallel to them. A consultant was engaged in February 2012 to begin
looking at alternatives for improvements to the intersection and addressing the
drainage ditch safety concerns.
The consultant developed several alternatives to address both issues. Two were
selected to present at a public meeting held on September 18, 2012 at the
American Legion on Cusseta Road. One alternative being a more traditional
design by constructing a T-intersection and the other alternative a
Roundabout. The public meeting was well attended with the favorable selection
being the Roundabout. The advantages to this design is it would allow for
continual flow of traffic and improve safety of the area. Pedestrian mobility
will be improved by construction of sidewalks along sections of Cusseta Road
and Old Cusseta Road. Both alternatives shifts the roadway away from the ditch
which has been classified as a stream.
Unless otherwise directed, Staff will move forward with the design and
construction of the Roundabout.
