Golf Course Revenues Shortfall
The revenue for Bull Creek and Oxbow Creek Golf Courses has been severely
impacted by excessive rain, snow and extremely cold weather. During the last
calendar year, Columbus experienced in excess of 80 inches of rain and 3 inches
of snow, as opposed to a normal yearly total of less than 50 inches of
precipitation.
In 2010 we have recorded 20.5 of rain and 3 inches of snow, for a total of 45
inches of precipitation since July 1, 2009. A large percentage of this has
occurred on weekends, which are our largest revenue generating days. On
weekends when we have not experienced precipitation, the extremely cold weather
has reduced rounds played and revenue. When not actually forced to close the
course to play because of weather conditions, we have had to restrict golf cart
usage to cart paths only, resulting in as much of a 40 per cent reduction in
revenue.
When the weather improves, we expect to see revenue at both courses return to
favorable levels. Additionally, we anticipate that the weak economy should
positively affect the revenue at both courses when we get into more favorable
golfing weather. Many people are forgoing expensive holiday and vacation
travel and staying home for their recreation. We also are seeing new faces at
both courses because many people have dropped private club memberships and are
electing to play at daily fee facilities. Coupled with the fact that the other
daily fee facilities are in poor condition, can only help to increase the
rounds played and revenues at both Bull Creek and Oxbow Creek.
I can assure you that every effort to contain costs while still maintaining the
city's assets are being taken. As part of our continuing efforts to streamline
operations, we have to date reduced the number of employee positions at Bull
Creek from eleven full time and six seasonal to just six full time employees.
At Oxbow Creek, we have reduced the number of employees from three full time
and one seasonal to two full time employees.
