A Resolution Authorizing TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION AND IF APPROVED GRANT FUNDS FROM BRIGHT FROM THE

START IN THE AMOUNT OF $575,000 TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BRIGHT FROM THE START

GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF EARLY CHILDCARE LEARNING FOR THE USDA SUMMER LUNCH

PROGRAM AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE CITY TO ACCEPT THE MUSCOGEE COUNTY SCHOOL

NUTRITION PROGRAM TO ACT AS THE SOLE VENDOR OF THE PROGRAM. ADDITIONALLY, TO

PROVIDE NUTRITIOUS USDA APPROVED SNACKS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR 2005-2006 AS

THE PROGRAM IS RUN DURING THE SUMMER, FISCAL YEARS 2005 AND 2006 ARE INCLUDED

IN ACCEPTANCE OF GRANT FUNDS. whereas, when the traditional school year closes for the summer, an important source of

nutritious meals for many low-income children is lost. The Department of Parks

and Recreation, Community Schools Division provides this Summer Lunch Program

and subsequent snack program during the summer vacation from May 2005 through

July 2005, crossing over the fiscal year for the City of Columbus and

throughout the school and fiscal year 2005-2006 and provides meals to children

who might not otherwise receive nutritious meals; and,
whereas, the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department administers the After School

Program in 32 locations throughout the city during the school year and 55

locations throughout the summer; and,


WHEREAS, the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department provides week-day

nutritious meals and snacks to program participants at no significant cost to

the city; the need for wholesome meals are offered to participants from 11:30

A.M. to 4:00 P.M. with nutritional components included; and,



WHEREAS, the need for nutritional meals are vital to the health and

stability of all youth.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

That the City Manager is hereby authorized to submit an application and if

approved accept approximately $575,000 from Bright From the Start under the

Summer Food Service Program for summer lunch/snack program from the state of

Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning and authorize amending the

Multi-Governmental grant fund by a like amount..
