A Resolution Authorizing TO APPLY FOR A HOMELAND SECURITY GRANT THROUGH GEORGIA EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
AGENCY (GEMA) TO UPGRADE THE CITY 800 MHZ RADIO COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR RADIO
INTEROPERABILITY WITH COUNTIES WITHIN THE GEMA REGION IV IN THE AMOUNT OF
$1,060,000. whereas, GEMA allocates funds through the annual Homeland Security Grant program for the
purpose of improving local government's ability to prevent and respond to
terrorist acts and natural disasters; and,
whereas, Columbus is working with the Region IV All Hazard Council who has recommended
that improving radio interoperability as one of the highest priorities for
local governments to be able to respond to said emergencies; and,
WHEREAS, the Police, Fire and Engineering departments worked together to
prepared a grant application to improve the City's 800 MHz Radio Communication
System to procure System Redundancy equipment, convert four channels to
digital/analog operation and flash upgrade certain mobile and portable radios
to operate throughout Muscogee, Harris and Troup counties in support of mutual
aide responses.
That the Interim City Manager is hereby authorized to submit an
application and if approved accept a Homeland Security Grant through GEMA for
the purpose of upgrading the City 800 MHz Radio Communication System for Radio
Interoperability with counties within the GEMA region IV in the amount of
$1,060,000.
