The Columbus, Georgia, Board of Tax Assessors met Wednesday, January 26, 2005,

at 2:00PM with Chairman Lawton Grantham, Assessors Richard Stallings, Ann

Grantham, William Braxton and Pat Hunter present. Also present was Chief

Appraiser Martin J. Land.



Assessor Pat Hunter made a motion to approve Minutes # 03-05, Assessor Ann

Grantham seconded the motion, motion carried unanimously.



The Board approved an assessment correction for real estate.



The following VA letter of application for VA exemption was reviewed and

approved:

Met with Mr. William regarding his personal property account # 06025601. Mr.

William said he opened his business license in 1999 and renewed it in 2000. He

said he never went into business. He said he found out that another service

company was using the same name as his business. He said he had a 6- month

lease for Unit 214 in Hilton on the Square. Mr. William said he closed his

business when his lease expired in 2001. The Board asked the Personal Property

Division to check and see if another business occupies Unit 214. They found out

that another business did occupy this unit on August 9, 2001. Assessor Richard

Stallings made the motion to remove the assessment for 2002; Assessor Ann

Grantham seconded the motion; carried unanimously.



Met with Mr. Tucker representing Lower Chattahoochee District Service Company

requesting non-taxability for properties located at 1501 and 1509 3rd Ave;

1500, 1508 and 1516 2nd Ave, (Parcel ID 005 012 001, 002, 018a, 019 and 020).

Mr. Tucker said Lower Chattahoochee District Service Company was a

non-profitable organization devoted to charitable pursuits which benefit the

elderly and handicapped. He said the services they provide include home meal

deliveries, homemaker aid, adult day care, respite for caregivers for people

with dementia. He said the organization was established in 1979 and was

previously located in the Wynnton Building. He said they receive their funds

from federal grants. Mr. Tucker said they employ 20 people who work in the

building. He said they had an influx of money and were able to purchase the

building they are now occupying. The Board asked him to furnish them with

copies of the bylaws and article of incorporation.



The Board reviewed the article of incorporation and by-laws received from

Christ for India

(Hopegivers International). The Board is requesting City Attorney Clifton Fay

to give an opinion whether they qualify for tax exempt status.
