2005 Legislative Agenda





1. Hazardous and Solid Waste Funding:



Introduce legislation to mandate that funds collected for waste tire removal be

placed in the Hazardous Waste Fund and the Solid Waste Fund instead of being

diverted elsewhere. (Carmen Cavezza)



2. Green space Funding:



Introduce legislation to fund the Greenspace Program. (Carmen Cavezza)



3. Family Coalition:



Support legislation to continue funding for the Family Coalition.



4. Industrial and Port Authority:



Introduce legislation to repeal Section 4-623 of Columbus Charter to delete

Industrial and Port Authority. Any action required by the Industrial and Port

Authority can be handled by the Development Authority. (Mayor Pro Tem Jack

Rodgers)



5. Infantry Museum:



Introduce legislation allowing for concurrent jurisdiction for police and fire,

local and federal, for Infantry Museum. (Carmen Cavezza)



6. UGA Cooperative Extension Services:



Support continued funding for the University of Georgia

Cooperative Extension Service and its county delivery system. Future success

in extension programming is threatened by continuing budget reductions.

7. Jail Overcrowding:



Introduce/Support legislation that will expedite transfer of state

inmates to the state prison from city/county jail. (Carry over from

2004 Agenda)



8. Trade Center Funding:



Urge funding previously committed to renovate/expand the

Trade Center in the amount of $22,000,000. (Carry over from

2004 Agenda)



9. Pay Raise for Elected Officials:



Oppose legislation which increases salaries of local elected

officials without a resolution of support from the local governing

authority. (Carry over from 2004 Agenda)



10. National Child Crime Search:



Introduce/Support legislation that would permit us to

fingerprint and do a national child crime search on all

employees who have or wish to have one on one contact with

children. This would be consistent with the Federal Child

Abuse Prevention Act. We have an ordinance mandating

such a search, however, since Georgia has not opted in to this

Act, such checks are not currently available. (Carry over from

2004 Agenda)



11. Health Department Proposed Cuts:



Oppose proposed cuts by the DHR Board to the FY2006 Budget for

the Department of Public Health (Grant-in-Aid, Tobacco Prevention,

Women?s Health Services).
