A RESOLUTION

NO.



WHEREAS, A. J. McClung, former Columbus Mayor and long-time Mayor Pro-Tem, died

on November 17, 2002 at the age of 90;



WHEREAS, he was born in Birmingham, Alabama and attended college at his beloved

Tuskegee University;



WHEREAS, in college, he was a member of the Golden Tigers' championship

football team, starting at fullback in 1933;



WHEREAS, after college, he taught industrial education at Arkansas State

College, taught high school and coached at Westfield High in Birmingham,

directed a USO in Panama City, Florida and moved to Columbus in 1952;



WHEREAS, he became director of the USO and then, in 1954, he became director of

the Brookhaven Y.M.C.A. which was renamed in his honor in 1978;



WHEREAS, he ran for the brand-new Columbus Council in 1970 and was elected to

the at-large position;



WHEREAS, he served as Mayor after the death of Mayor J. R. Allen and continued

to serve as Mayor Pro-tem until his retirement in 1998;



WHEREAS, he was a former member of the Georgia Advisory Committee of the U.S.

Commission on Civil Rights, past President of Georgia Municipal Association

(3rd District), a member of the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia

and a loyal member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Columbus;



Whereas, because of A. J. McClung's distinguished career in public service, his

love of the Tuskegee-Morehouse Annual Football Classic and his long-time

service as a Columbus community leader, this Council deems it appropriate to

rename Memorial Stadium at South Commons as the A. J. McClung Memorial Stadium.



NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:



We hereby express our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of

Mr. A. J. McClung. We hereby officially rename Memorial Stadium at South

Commons as the A. J. McClung Memorial Stadium. The City Manager is authorized

to erect appropriate markers at A. J. McClung Memorial Stadium. Let a copy of

this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mr. A. J. McClung.

Introduced at a regular meeting of the Council of Columbus, Georgia held on the

3rd day of December, 2002, and adopted at said meeting by the affirmative vote
