A RESOLUTION

NO.





WHEREAS, Eben L. Reid of Columbus died on June 3, 2004;



WHEREAS, he was born on November 3, 1909 in Charlotte, North Carolina, son of

the late Ximena Hunter Reid and John Calvin Reid;



WHEREAS, he received an A.B. degree in 1931 from Erskine College, where he also

lettered in football, basketball and tennis and he remained an avid tennis

player until his nineties;



WHEREAS, he obtained a master's degree in education from the University of

Pittsburgh in 1941;



WHEREAS, he taught high school and served as principal in Winnsboro and Rock

Hill, South Carolina and worked as an FBI agent in World War II;



WHEREAS, he also worked as executive director of Chambers of Commerce in Rock

Hill, S.C., Meridian, Miss., New Castle, Pa., and Columbus, Ga., and worked as

a senior vice-president of the Fourth National Bank (now SunTrust) and an

associate with AFLAC;



WHEREAS, he was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club of Columbus where he was

president in 1962 and was awarded the Legion of Honor for 34 years of perfect

attendance;



WHEREAS, he was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served

as an elder, Sunday School teacher, chairman of the pastor nominating committee

and other committees, and he served for two years as president of United Way

and four years on the Board of Trustees of Erskine College;



WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his wife Helen McConaghy who died in 1989,

his second wife, Marie Patterson Reid who died in 1998, two brothers and three

sisters;



WHEREAS, he is survived by his son E. Lowry Reid, Jr. (Ann) of Columbus,

granddaughter Lesslie Reid Carnahan (Blair) of Columbus, grandson Dr. John

Calvin Reid II of Atlanta, and great-grandson Eben Reid Carnahan of

Columbus.



NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:



We hereby express our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of

Eben L. Reid. His service to the Columbus community will long be remembered.

Let a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the family of Eben L. Reid.
