Subject Signs

Description Have the staff to check and see if there was a variance granted to

the Texaco Service station on Veteran's Parkway for a sign to be erected a few

years ago.

Received From

Assigned To Richard Bishop

Response When Texaco bought the old Conoco gas station at 5426 Veterans Pky,

Signs Inc. requested a permit to erect a new sign and remove the existing 50

ft. high ground sign. Robert Teasley of Signs, Inc. removed the sign face from

the existing sign pole and requested to erect the new sign before removing the

existing pole, advising that he would remove it before the job was complete.

Once the new sign was in place, Mr. Teasley advised that Texaco wanted to keep

and use the existing sign in addition to the new sign. Inspections & Codes

denied this request because the Sign Ordinance enacted by Council in Feb. 1998

prohibits a second ground sign on road frontage less than 300 feet. Mr.

Teasley appealed the decision of the Building Official to the Board of Zoning

Appeals. (April, 2000)

The Board of Zoning Appeals granted Mr. Teasley?s appeal based on his

information that this was an already existing sign and that the size of the new

face would be smaller than the original faceEach case before the Board of

Zoning Appeals is decided on its own merits, surrounding property or other

circumstances notwithstanding.
