CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Commissioner Susan Anderson at 12:03 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 8, 2002 MEETING
The minutes of the October 8, 2002 Commissioner=s meeting were approved.
TREASURER=S REPORT
The Treasurers report was presented by Julie Bray and approved.
PETITIONS & COMMUNICATIONS
Commissioner Paula James presented to the Commissioners the following:
* Thank you cards that were received from the Neighborhood Improvement Program,
Wynnton School and Commissioner Stan Stovall.
* A Certificate of Appreciation from the Mayor=s Commission on Diversity was
presented to Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission for the outstanding
contribution to the Columbus International Festival.
OLD BUSINESS
None
NEW BUSINESS
* Executive Director Report: Executive Director Gloria Weston-Smart
expressed thanks to the Commissioners for all they have done and will do for
the continual success of the Commission. Gloria stated that more
information will be forth coming during the committee reports.
k Commissioners Appointment: Commissioner Susan Anderson reported Commissioners
Liliana McDaniel and Audrey Hollingsworth resigned and recommended Patricia
Cardin to replace Liliana McDaniel and Linda McLemore to replace Audrey
Hollingsworth. The Commissioners accepted the recommendations. Susan also
stated that eleven Commissioners will have to be replaced next year and asked
Commissioners to submit names for possible candidates.
HIGHLIGHTS OF COMMITTEE REPORTS
k ANight of Lights@ - Commissioner Paula James stated that the ANight of
Lights@ event turned out to be a great success despite the cold weather. Paula
expressed her appreciation to the Commissioners that supported the event.
Executive Director Gloria Weston-Smart expressed thanks to Commissioner Paula
James and Elliott Waddell for their dedication and hard work in planning and
implementing the event. Gloria stated that WalGreens donated Christmas lights
to replace the stolen decorations.
k Phone Book Recycling - Executive Director Gloria Weston-Smart reported that
the Telephone Book Recycling program is in full force. Commissioners were asked
to encourage everyone to recycle their old telephone books. The goal for this
years Telephone Book Recycling campaign is 100,000.
k Christmas Tree Recycling - Commissioner Jim Grant reported that the community
can begin dropping off their Christmas trees starting December 26 thru January
4. A free seedling will be given out on Saturday, January 4 only.
Commissioners were asked to sign up to volunteer at the Britt David site on
Saturday, January 4, 2003 for at least an hour.
k Gateways Foundation Update - Ex-officio member Rachael Buice reported that
during a recent Gateways Foundation committee meeting, Chairman John Flournoy
introduced a proposed Gateways project. The beautification project would
extend from I-85 to I-185.
k Yard Waste Composting - Commissioner Bill Green reported on the trip to
Moultrie, Georgia. The purpose of the trip was to tour and gather information
about their composting facility. Gromor Organics, Inc. of Moultrie was founded
in 1999 to increase the organic material in the local farms soils, and to
prepare for a 2005 ban on methyl bromide, a widely used fumigant that kills
insects, nematodes, weeds and pathogens in more than 100 crops. The town of
Moultrie supplies the yard waste for composting and save the city landfill
space. Gromor produces the compost to enrich the farming fields. Commissioner
Green suggested inviting Mr. Peter Germishulzen, Manager of Gromor, to Columbus
and to explore possible opportunities.
k Peachtree Mall Tree Planting - Commissioner Susan Anderson presented a tree
planting project with TreesColumbus at Peachtree Mall. KCBC will help secure
for the planting which will start at 10:00 a.m on Saturday, January 11, 2003.
k Arbor Day Committee Meeting - Executive Director Gloria Weston-Smart stated
that there will be a meeting with the Arbor Day Committee and Rachael Buice in
the next month. Rachel has suggested we have an Arbor Day with exciting
activities such as teaching kids and adults how to plant trees. The possible
location for Arbor Day will be in the Lakebottom area.
k Welcome Signs - Commissioner Daphne Dove-Peirce reported that the prices for
the welcome signs will need to be readjusted. The original plan for the
welcome sign project was to obtain funding from civic and social organizations,
but because of the cost to implement this project, the plan will now have to be
shifted into another direction. Commissioners were encouraged to provide ideas
for this project.
k Annual Awards Luncheon - Commissioners David Hay reported on the committee
meeting held on Tuesday, December 3, 2002. The Awards Luncheon will be held
May 15, 2003 at CSU, Elizabeth Turner Building at 11:30 a.m. The cost for the
adults and children will stay the same, $10.00 youth and $18.00 adults. The
categories for the award application was changed to Individuals, Businesses,
Schools, and Organizations. The committee is still in search of the
entertainment and the master of ceremony. A copy of the revised awards
Application is enclosed.
