THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
September 28, 2004
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Chairman Donald Clack, Floyd
Washington, Michael Silverstein, Nancy Wilkeson, Earl Bagley, June Holder, Rev.
Willie Hill and Rhudine Nelson. Richard Hagler had an excused absence. Staff
members present were John Milam and Steve Brown.
Minutes of the August 24, 2004, meeting were approved as presented. Motion
made by Rhudine Nelson and seconded by June Holder.
Report of Steve Brown, Superintendent
It has taken six days to clean up the damage done by the recent hurricanes.
Bull Creek received an additional 9.9? of rain in September that delayed the
completion of the bunkers and cart paths edging. The greens mower has been
raised 10,000 of an inch each week to reach a new height of ?? for the winter.
It is easier to speed the greens up than to have the greens too fast. The
height of the mower for the fairways has also been raised. 18 holes have
already been fertilized with the remaining 18 holes yet to be done. Over
seeding of the tees and the driving range will be done the second week of
October.
The weather station installation is in place and awaiting the program. The
pilot valve will be changed on all heads on East Course. Planned work for the
upcoming month is to remove dead trees, backhoe work and to install catch basin
and drain tiles to several holes on the west.
The use of the color flags will begin in the winter months. Training of the
greens crew is forthcoming.
Report of John Milam, Director of Golf
Godwin Creek
There are no changes at Godwin Creek. They have no assets to speak of and are
not holding their own. They received a donation from John Godwin. The better
players from the First Tee are using the facilities at Oxbow Creek. A bill has
been sent and no payment has been received from the First Tee Program for the
expense of the range balls. The authority will allow the players to continue
to use the range.
Bull Creek
Bull Creek?s revenue for August ?04 was $101,113 compared to $60,683 last
year. Year to date, Bull creek has netted $67,602. John also noted that some
of Oxbow?s players are playing more at Bull Creek. The figures are condition
and weather driven. Larry Mize played 27 holes and was quite impressed with the
new design. Scott Clark, of Maple Ridge, has played 4-5 rounds on the new
course as well.
John wrote a letter to Mr. Michael Butz, USGA, extending an invitation for the
use of Bull Creek as the host facility for a USGA event.
Oxbow Creek
Oxbow Creek?s revenue is up a little for August ?04 compared to August ?03.
D. J. DeVictor Bonus Request
John Milan received a letter dated September 15, 2004, requesting an
explanation why his bonus was denied. Chairman, Donald Clack will answer Mr.
DeVictor?s letter with outlined reasons why the authority did not approve his
bonus.
Scorecards
The authority decided on the color and the style of the new scorecard. It was
agreed upon that we would keep the East Course and West Course names.
A motion was made at 4:45 p.m. to adjourn by Earl Bagley and seconded by Willie
Hill.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Secretary
