An ordinance revising Chapter 11 of the Columbus Code (Fire Protection)

by amending the promotional procedure and by identifying cross-training

requirements for the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services; and for

other purposes.



THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY ORDAINS:



SECTION 1.



Chapter 11 of the Columbus Code is hereby amended by adding a new Section

11-17.18 to read as follows:



Certification and Cross-Training



(a) All sworn personnel will be required to obtain and maintain State

of Georgia firefighter certification.



(b) All operations firefighters will be required to obtain and maintain

State of Georgia Emergency Medical - Technician Intermediate certification.



(c) All operations sergeants, lieutenants, and captains will be

required to obtain and maintain State of Georgia Emergency Medical - Technician

Basic certification.



(d) Implementation of the cross-training requirement shall be based on

the department's ability to provide the required certification training on an

annual basis.



(e) The certification requirements described in (b) and (c) above shall

not apply to those personnel that are within five (5) years of their normal

retirement date.



SECTION 2.



Subsection 11-17.17 (b) is hereby deleted in its entirety and

subsections 11-17.17 (c) and (d) are hereby re-lettered (b) and (c).

SECTION 3.



This ordinance shall be effective March 1, 2004.



SECTION 4.



All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with this ordinance

are hereby repealed.
