AN ORDINANCE
NO. __________
An ordinance amending the Public Safety Position Classification Plan and Pay
Plan of the Columbus Consolidated Government by changing position titles for
Fire Lieutenants; and changing pay practices for Fire Lieutenants and Fire
Captains to comply with new Fair Labor Standards Act rules.

THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY ORDAINS:
SECTION 1.
That the Human Resources Department is hereby authorized to change the position
title of Fire Inspector to Lieutenant Inspector; and the position title of
Instructor/Fire Lieutenant to Lieutenant Instructor.
SECTION 2.
That the salaries of current Fire Lieutenants assigned to Fire
Suppression will be reduced by 6.5% and said Fire Lieutenants shall become
entitled to overtime payments as specified by Section 7(k) of the Fair Labor
Standards Act.
SECTION 3.
That the newly named Lieutenant Inspectors shall retain their current
salaries and become eligible for overtime payments as specified by Section 7(k)
of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
SECTION 4.
That the newly named Lieutenant Instructors shall retain their current
salaries and their Section 13(a)(1) Administrative Employee exemption under the
Fair Labor Standards Act.
SECTION 5.
That Fire Lieutenants and EMS Lieutenants promoted to Fire or EMS Captain, and
partially exempt personnel promoted to Lieutenant Inspector or Lieutenant
Instructor shall be entitled to a 6.5% pay increase in addition to any
promotional pay increase required by ordinance, to compensate for the loss of
overtime.
SECTION 6.
That the effective date of this ordinance shall be August 14, 2004.
SECTION 7.
All Ordinances and parts of Ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
