A RESOLUTION

NO.







WHEREAS, Columbus real estate pioneer, Master Sgt. (Ret.) George Rowell, Sr.

died on Friday, January 7, 2005 at his home at the age of 87;



WHEREAS, Sgt. Rowell was born October 18, 1917 to the late William Rowell and

Molly Colquitt Rowell of Smiths, Alabama;



WHEREAS, he enlisted in the army in 1935 and retired in 1958 as a Master

Sergeant, served in World War II and the Korean War, taught at the

Transportation School in Frankfurt, Germany, ran the Tuskegee Army Air Force

Motor Pool and worked at the Pentagon;



WHEREAS, he was on of the first black realtors in Columbus and worked for

Carter Realty from 1960-1980 and Turman Realty from 1980-2004;



WHEREAS, he was also a successful entrepreneur having owned several businesses

including Sgt.'s Chicken House, Sgt.'s Check Cashing and Big O's Package Store;



WHEREAS, he was a member of the Columbus Board of Realtors, Georgia Association

of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, United Metro Real Estate Board

of Columbus, Million Dollar Club of Columbus, Benning Knights, and had served

on the Muscogee County Board of Elections, Columbus Metro Urban League,

Muscogee County Civil Defense Board, United Givers, Boy Scouts of America and

the YMCA;



WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife Betty Rowell, two sons, Charles Rowell

(Carol) of Fayetteville, Georgia and George M. Rowell, Jr. of Columbus, two

daughters, Karin R. Thompson (Legaree) of Columbus and Mollene R. Williams

(Bobby) of Tampa, Florida, one stepson Richard Brown (Charron) of Riviera

Beach, Florida, one stepdaughter Pamala Brown of Charlotte, North Carolina,

five grandsons, and four granddaughters and he was a member of the Cusseta Road

Church of Christ.



NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:



We hereby express our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of

Master Sgt. (Ret.) George Rowell, Sr. His service to the Columbus community and

his country will long be remembered. Let a copy of this Resolution be forwarded

to the family of Sgt. George Rowell, Sr.

Introduced at a regular meeting of the Council of Columbus, Georgia held on the

8th day of February, 2005, and adopted at said meeting by the affirmative vote

of members of Council.
