TO: All City Officials, Employees and Citizens of Columbus, Georgia
FROM: Riley Land, Deputy Director
Emergency Management Division
DATE: February 15, 2005
SUBJECT: Severe Weather Awareness Week (SWAW) Material
Governor Sonny Perdue has proclaimed the week of February 20-26, 2005, as
Severe Weather Awareness Week (SWAW) in Georgia. This observance is designed
to educate Georgians about safety, preparedness, and response procedures for a
variety of severe weather events such as winter storms, floods, hurricanes,
lightning, thunderstorms, tornadoes, heat waves and droughts.
We encourage all local residents to observe Family Protection Day on Monday,
February 21, and to participate in the Statewide Severe Weather Drill on
Wednesday morning, February 23. The National Weather Service will initiate the
drill. Schools, churches, businesses, and local governments are encouraged to
take part. In the event of bad weather on drill day, it will be rescheduled
for Friday, February 25.
The City?s participation in the Statewide Severe Weather Drill on Wednesday,
February 23rd
will include the sounding of the outdoor emergency warning sirens upon
notification by the
National Weather Service. Please remember, the siren activation on this day is
only a drill.
