An ordinance revising the promotional procedures for the Columbus
Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services for the ranks of Fire Captain
and Fire Lieutenant; and for other purposes.

THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY ORDAINS:
SECTION 1.
Subsection 11-17.5(d) of the Columbus Code is hereby deleted in its
entirety and there is substituted a new subsection 11-17.5(d) to read as
follows:
"(d) For promotion to fire captain. To be eligible to participate in
the promotional procedure for fire captain, the employee must:
(1) Hold an associate's degree (or equivalent two-year degree) or have a date
of service prior to September 16, 1997; and
(2) A total of two continuous years serving as a fire lieutenant or EMS
captain; and
(3) In addition, EMS captains must have successfully passed the fire sergeant
and fire lieutenant promotional process, but are not required to hold the rank
of fire sergeant or fire lieutenant."
SECTION 2.
Subsection 11-17.17(a) of the Columbus Code is hereby deleted in its
entirety and there is substituted a new subsection 11-17.17(a) to read as
follows:
"(a) EMS lieutenants shall be required to participate in and successfully
complete the promotional process for fire sergeant and EMS captains shall be
required to participate in and successfully complete the promotional process
for fire sergeant and fire lieutenant. Upon completion of this process and
upon meeting all minimum eligibility requirements, an EMS lieutenant must
compete for fire lieutenant (integrated rank) and an EMS captain must compete
for fire captain (integrated rank)."
SECTION 3.
All ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict with this ordinance
are hereby repealed.
