Election Report

November 6, 2002 / 2:00p.m.

PERDUE UPSETS BARNES FOR GOVERNOR

In a shocking upset, Georgia elected Republican Agri-businessman Sonny

Perdue as Governor. He defeated incumbent Democrat Roy Barnes. Perdue becomes

the first Republican Governor of Georgia in 130 years. His coat tails were

long.

Chambliss defeats Max Cleland for U.S. Senate

In another major victory for Republicans, Congressman Saxby Chambliss

defeated incumbent Democrat Max Cleland. This was not as big an upset and had

been widely rumored for the past week.

State Senate

State Senate Barely Democratic

The Georgia Senate changed from 32/24 democratic advantage to 30/26

democratic. There are several rumored party switchings in the works and it is

anticipated that the Senate will become controlled by the Republican Party,

possibly within days.

State House

House Speaker Murphy Defeated

Democratic House Speaker Tom Murphy, the longest serving presiding

legislative officer in U.S. history was defeated in his re-election bid by

challenger Bill Heath. Not only will Murphy no longer be Speaker, he will no

longer be a member of the House. This set off a scramble among several

democratic lieutenants for the Speakership. Representatives Terry Coleman and

Larry Walker are the leading contenders, but given the change of influence it

is wide open right now. The Democrats retained control of the House by a

relatively comfortable margin.

Among other notables defeated were Senate Majority Leader Charles

Walker, House Industry Chairman Newt Hudson, and Senate Education Chairman

Richard Marable. The Democrats still retain a wide margin in the House. The

numbers are now 106 Democrats, 73 Republicans, and 1 Independents. There are

wide open negotiations for leadership roles.

Other Chairmanship losses were Senate Agriculture Chairman Harold

Ragan, House Public Safety Chairman Mike Snow and Senate Transportation

Chairman Van Streat.

Constitutional Officers

Constitutional officers that retained their seats were Attorney General

Thurbert Baker, Secretary of State Cathy Cox, Lt. Governor Mark Taylor, and

Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine. Former Republican House member Kathy Cox

upset Barbara Christmas for the open School Superintendent Seat.
