Dear Isaiah,

The Landscape and Forestry Division would like to begin implementing a public

awareness program as it relates to the removal of city trees. Trees often

evoke strong emotions, especially when we talk of removing them. It is

sometimes difficult for people to understand why we remove trees. I believe

that the city can do a better job of educating the public and telling them why

certain trees have to be removed.

I would like to begin a pilot program in the Lakebottom Park area that will

provide notification to the citizens of tree removals in the park. I have

enclosed a document that I would like to produce as a poster than can be

attached to trees that are to be removed. Of course, the poster would be made

of material that would withstand the outdoor elements and would be reusable.

The information on the poster is simple, but explains that the tree will be

removed and why.

I believe that this type of approach will be beneficial to the city. We will

be telling people prior to the removal, telling them why, and providing them

with a number if they have any questions. These would be used whenever

practical. Of course, if we have an emergency, notice of this kind would not

be possible. If these notices are successful, I would like to implement the

use of them in other park areas and areas that have demonstrated a sensitivity

to their urban forest.

In the future, I would also like to add door hangers as a part of our public

awareness program. The door hangers would supply the citizen with a mail in

response to gauge the our level of service, advise of possible tree planting

sites, advise of systematic pruning to be conducted in their area, etc.

I think these programs would not only educate the public on tree care and the

reasons why we have to remove trees but also show that the city is taking a

proactive approach to the trees in our community. If you have any questions,

please call.

Yours truly,

Rachel Buice

Landscape and Forestry Manager
