Council Members
WHEREAS, Mr. John Hardy Sanders, Jr. of Columbus died on June 2, 2004;



WHEREAS, Mr. Sanders was born on October 21, 1921 in Johnson City, S.C., the

son of the late Fannie Bell King Sanders and John W. Sanders;



WHEREAS, he retired after twenty-one years as Chief Post Engineer with the

Civil Service;



WHEREAS, he served in World War II as a U. S. Marine and received two Purple

Hearts, one at Guadal Canal;



WHEREAS, he received an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 1947, was

a member V.F.W. 665, American Legion 35, DAV No. 7, and was a Guadal Canal

Campaign Veteran;



WHEREAS, Mr. Sanders was known as "The Flag Man" in the Columbus area for his

patriotism to his country and at his death, had just returned from attending

the World War II Memorial ceremony held in Washington, D.C.



WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his wife, Addie E. Sanders and is survived

by two brothers, Tommy Sanders and James Sanders. Survivors include two

daughters, Patricia Prince and husband Donnie of Cairo, Ga., and Beth Broen and

husband Jack of Dunwoody, Ga.; a son, John H. Sanders III and wife Cathy of

Columbus; two sisters, Thelma Varnado of Cordele, Ga., and Dora Moore of Fort

Myers, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Sanders Danford, Christopher Prince

and Scott Prince; four great grandchildren, Peyton Prince, Sadie Grace Prince,

Austin Danford and Kenzie Danford; and a special friend, Elaine DeMarco of

Columbus.



NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:



We hereby express our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of

Mr. John Hardy Sanders, Jr. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his

family.

Introduced at a regular meeting of the Council of Columbus, Georgia, held on

the 15th day of June, 2004, and adopted at said meeting by the affirmative vote

of ten members of said Council.
