Captain Joe McCrea, of the Sheriff's Department, spoke to the board about
security at the Government Center. The board addressed questions to Captain
McCrea about aspects of security measures that will be enforced during the
election. After listening to the security measures, the board will make a list
of proposals that, by law, have to be done during the election.
The Chairperson, Jan Dickens called the board meeting to order.
COMMENTS: Nancy told the board that we need four people, on election day to
answer the phones. Ken stated that he knew of two people who have experience
from working with the telephone company.
OLD BUSINESS:
Move to New Office: The new furniture for the office will arrive on March
12th. The Lektriever will be moved the week of the 18th. The construction work
will be finished by March 15th. Ken asked about the booths for absentee
voting. He has a concern about the privacy for the voters.
Pollworker Pay: Margaret Jenkins made a motion to accept the suggestion that
was reflected in the February board minutes, to adopt the increase in managers
pay to $160.00, assistant managers $125.00 and $90.00 for the clerks. Mr.
Wright seconded the motion, vote was unanimous.
Training Session: Nancy provided the board with 2 proposals for the poll
worker training. She contacted Mr. Larry Campbell of the Trade Center and
Major Russell Traino of the Public Safety Complex about using their facility.
Margaret Jenkins made a motion to accept proposal B, Public Safety Complex, for
the pollworker training. Mr. Wright seconded the motion. Vote was unanimous.
The chairperson asked that Nancy confirm using the facility and letting Mr.
Campbell know that we would not be in need of Trade Center.
The chairperson asked for suggestions on how to delegate the training of the
pollworkers. Nancy will put together a proposal for the training to be
presented at the April board meeting. Ken expressed a concern about having a
reserve list of potential pollworkers that would have attended the mandated
pollworker training. He was assured that a reserve list would be readily
available if needed.
Government Center Precinct: The board discussed the issue of relocating the
government center precinct. They asked that Nancy contact Chief Willie Dozier
about the possibility of using the Public Safety Complex as a precinct. Ken
Barfield made a motion that if the public safety complex can be used, that
Nancy write the Justice Department for approval. Vote was unanimous.
U.S. Justice Approval: The board was told that we have not received a reply
from the Justice Department on approval of relocating the Wynnton, Britt and
Brookstone precincts.
CORRESPONDENCE:
Received a letter from Cathy Cox, Secretary of State, in reference to the new
voting equipment for the November election.
