THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
April 26, 2005
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Chairman Donald Clack, Floyd
Washington, Nancy Wilkeson, Earl Bagley, Rhudine Nelson, June Holder, Michael
Silverstein and Richard Hagler. Willie Hill had an excused absence. Staff
member present was John Milam.
Minutes of the March 22, 2005 meeting were approved as presented. Motion made
by June Holder and seconded by Mike Silverstein.
Superintendent Report by John Milam
The last month has been very wet (10.92? of rain) with cool temperatures. The
greens are at least thirty days behind in growth. The fairways have not been
fertilized. Maintenance has been busy cleaning up from the two floods. A
mini-excavator was rented for one week to remove the silt from the creek near 3
East green and the drainage pipe on 12 East. The main line on 2 East fairway,
the drainage pipe on 15 East and 3 West were repaired and work on drainage at
the maintenance shop. Plans are to repair the erosion problem on 3-West
fairway. Slicing of the greens will resume once warmer temperatures return.
Report of John Milam, Director of Golf
Godwin Creek
No financial report was available. Nancy Wilkeson reported the following from
The First Tee Meeting held on April 13, 2005. A mower was donated from Maple
Ridge and there are plans to purchase a used mower and trailer. Students now
pay $15 to attend a 4-week session. The men?s association from Maple Ridge
donated $250 and two individuals gave an additional $200. The First Tee is
looking for ideas to get regular members to contribute to their program. It
was suggested to Mr. Milam that Bull Creek participate in requesting donations
for the First Tee.
Oxbow Creek
Oxbow Creek received the $150,000 from the City of Columbus. The revenues
compared to this time last year are lagging due to the amount of rain
received. Mr. Milam called in favors to repair the bridge by the 2nd Tee that
was damaged by the recent flooding.
Bull Creek
Bull Creek?s year to date expenses show a deficit of $65,684. Of that figure,
$50,000 is for debt services and cost allocation leaving approximately $15,000
in actual debt. Aflac league has begun. They have 112 league members that
will play 9 holes every Monday afternoon. Several outings have been booked and
this will increase revenue loss due to the rains. Bull Creek offers corporate
memberships. These are available in blocks of 4 for $400 each plus sales tax.
To date, Bull Creek has 18 corporate memberships with approximately 90 members.
New Business
June Holder brought up the lack of leagues for ladies, men?s and seniors at
Bull Creek. She will receive a membership roster of ladies names to contact,
Donald Clack will received a men?s list and Earl Bagley will get a roster for
seniors. By-laws will be established and brought to the next monthly meeting.
Mr. Milam passed out a copy of the Working Budget for Bull Creek and Oxbow
Creek for the authority members to review. The gradual increase in fees will
offset any additional expenses.
Mr. Paul Lowery, a former employee at Bull Creek, was called up for active duty
and now has returned. He is currently working in Public Services with the City.
The house on Bull Creek?s property will be vacated by May 2, 2005. Mr. Chuck
Lewis, the assistant superintendent of greens would like to move in. He will
be asked to maintain the home and look after the course after hours in exchange
for rent.
June Holder asked Mr. Milam to re-install a drink and snack machine by the
restrooms on the west course. There is no drink cart available during weekdays.
A motion was made at 4:33 p.m. to adjourn by Richard Hagler and seconded by
Rhudine Nelson.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Secretary
