A RESOLUTION
NO.
WHEREAS, Honorable William J. Smith, Muscogee County Superior Court Judge,
will be retiring on December 31, 2002;
WHEREAS, Judge Smith began his service as an FBI agent in 1966 and after
working in a private law practice from 1969-1970, he worked as an Assistant
Solicitor and then was hired as an Assistant District Attorney in 1971;
WHEREAS, Judge Smith was appointed District Attorney in 1978 and served as
District Attorney until January, 1989;
WHEREAS, in 1988, he won his only contested election for Superior Court Judge
of the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit;
WHEREAS, Judge Smith attended Columbus High School, received a B.A. Degree from
his beloved alma mater, Auburn University, and he received his law degree from
Tulane University Law School;
WHEREAS, Judge Smith will assume senior status as a Superior Court Judge and
will also be available for mediation services to help lawyers and clients
resolve cases without a trial;
WHEREAS, Judge Smith's distinguished career is worthy of special commendation
by this Council.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby commend and express our deep appreciation to Judge William J. Smith
for his diligent and faithful service to the citizens of the Chattahoochee
Judicial Circuit and the Columbus community. We wish him happiness and
contentment in his retirement. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Judge William J. Smith.
