THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
JULY 23, 2002
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Donald Clack, Chairman, Dr. Earl
Bagley, Rhudine Nelson, Rick Cravens, Nancy Wilkeson, Richard Hagler, Floyd
Washington and June Holder. Staff members present were John Milam, Steve
Brown, Jamie Hughes. Pat O?Brien, USGA Agronomist Southeast Region was also
present.
Chairman Donald Clack introduced new Golf Authority members Richard Hagler,
Nancy Wilkeson and Floyd Washington.
Minutes of the June 2002 meeting were approved as presented. Motion made by
Dr. Bagley and seconded by Rhudine Nelson.
Pat O?Brien, USGA Agronomist for this region visited Oxbow and Bull Creek Golf
Courses today and spoke briefly of the condition of both courses. Bull Creek
and Oxbow?s greens and fairways are in good shape. Bull Creek?s nine under
renovation is looking good, with exception of #13 & #17 greens. Both of these
greens need further attention, but overall the new construction/renovation
looks good. Mr. O?Brien commented on the unsightly grass clippings on the
fairways and tees. He suggested we look at new fairway equipment, possibly
tractor and ground driven mowers, sprayers and growth retardants as a means of
controlling these unsightly clippings. Mr. O?Brien suggested we look at seven
or eight skilled and well paid full-time employees as the emphasis of our
grounds crew, rather than using unskilled labor. Mr. O?Brien stated equipment,
chemicals and skilled labor are needed for best results for a golf course. A
complete written report will be sent to John Milam and the Golf Authority.
Report of Steve Brown, Superintendent
Bull Creek Golf Course
? Use of pump was lost for about two weeks, but it is now working properly.
? Will look into cost of ground driven fairway unit.
Oxbow Creek Golf Course
? Greens and fairways in good shape
Godwin Creek Golf Course
? No report received and no representative present.
Report of John Milam, Director of Golf
? Lien releases from Chuck Carter are winding down.
Old Business
First Tee/Godwin Creek and the National Chapter of First Tee are getting close
to having a lease drawn up.
After discussion of Hardaway High School?s annual gold tournament, it was
decided that because Bull Creek will only have 18 holes of golf open in the
Spring of 2003 due to renovation of the remaining 18 holes, that we would be
unable to allow Hardaway High School to tie-up the golf course for two full
days, as was the case this past spring. Golf Authority will contact Larry
Gaither, Hardaway High School golf coach with suggestions for the 2003
tournament. These suggestions will include possibly shortening the tournament,
limit number of entries, or perhaps moving the tournament to another site,
etc. These suggestions to be ironed out at a future meeting.
New Business
John Milam passed out a Golf Industry brochure explaining price wars and
revenue per round. There was discussion regarding holding the Golf Authority
meeting at Oxbow in the near future.
There being no further business, meeting adjourned 5:55pm.
Respectfully submitted,
June Holder, Secretary
