RESOLUTION
NO.
WHEREAS, Columbus Police Chief Willie L. Dozier will be retiring on October 31,
2004;
WHEREAS, Chief Dozier began his service with the Department as a police officer
in January, 1971;
WHEREAS, he was promoted to Sergeant in 1974, to Lieutenant in 1981, to Major
in 1987 and to Assistant Chief in 1996;
WHEREAS, he was appointed as Chief of Police on November 2, 1999;
WHEREAS, he obtained a B.S. Degree in Sociology from Alabama A & M in 1970,
received his Master's Degree in Education from Georgia State University in
1974, and received a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice and in Education from
Troy State University in 1978;
WHEREAS, during his tenure, he has helped supervise the construction of a new
Public Safety complex, helped coordinate security for the 1996 Olympic Softball
Tournament and has ensured the safety of participants at various public events
including the annual demonstrations and counterdemonstrations near the Fort
Benning gates;
WHEREAS, under his leadership, the Columbus Police Department has grown to be
one of the most respected and well educated police forces in Georgia and the
entire nation.
NOW, THEREFORE THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby express our deep appreciation to Columbus Police Chief Willie L.
Dozier and congratulate him upon his upcoming retirement on October 31, 2004.
He has served Columbus and all its citizens honorably for 33 years and we wish
him every success in the future. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Chief Willie L. Dozier.

26th day of October, 2004, and adopted at said meeting by the affirmative vote
