A RESOLUTION

No.



WHEREAS, on Thursday, September 16, 2004, Hurricane Ivan made its way north

through Georgia and left damage and power outages in the Columbus community and

the surrounding areas;



WHEREAS, employees of the Georgia Power Company and Columbus, Georgia worked

many hours of overtime restoring power, cleaning and clearing rights-of-way and

taking calls from concerned citizens;



WHEREAS, Georgia Power employees worked in rain and winds which at times gusted

above 50 mph and when power was restored to the Columbus community, they rested

a few hours and then traveled to Alabama to help communities which were

devastated by Hurricane Ivan;



WHEREAS, Columbus Public Services employees from the Forestry/Beautification

Division, Street Division, Rainwater Division, Heavy Equipment Division,

Refuse/Recycling Division, Citizen Service Center, and Administration worked

diligently to clean up debris and clear streets and rights-of-way, with some

employees working from 12:00 a.m. Thursday, September 16, through 12:00 a.m.

Friday, September 17;



WHEREAS, Public Safety employees worked 78 hours of overtime during a 60-hour

period from September 15-18, 2004 and the 911 center received 3,230 calls and

supervised 1,069 police dispatches, 158 fire dispatches and 134 EMS dispatches;



WHEREAS, the dedication of these Georgia Power Company and Columbus, Georgia

employees is worthy of special recognition by this Council.



NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:



We hereby express our deep appreciation to the employees of the Georgia Power

Company and the Consolidated Government of Columbus, Georgia for their hard

work and perseverance during Hurricane Ivan in Columbus and the surrounding

communities. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Georgia Power

Company, the Director of Public Services and the Chiefs of the Columbus Police

Department and the Department of Fire and EMS.

12th day of October, 2004, and adopted at said meeting by the affirmative vote
