THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
Minutes of Meeting
March 26, 2002
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Michael Silverstein, Chairman, Dr.
Earl Bagley, June Holder, Rannie Lewis, Donald Clack, Rhudine Nelson, and Rick
Cravens. Authority members Judge Albert Thompson and Willie Hill had excused
absences. Staff members present were John Milam and Steve Brown.
The Golf Authority minutes of February 2002 were approved as presented. Motion
by Rannie Lewis, second by Rhudine Nelson.
Report of Steve Brown, Superintendent
Bull Creek Golf Course
? The greens on the West Course were aerated with ?? tines and verticut
to thin them.
? The greens on the East course are improving weekly. Their growth was
set back with the last frost. The greens were aerated using a hydro-jet.
? Fertilizer has been applied to the fairways.
? The fairways green up will be delayed due to the late frost and
herbicide applications.
? Would like to reduce the golf course maintenance staff from 11
employees to 8 and add one more prison guard and an 8 man inmate crew. This
could be a potential savings of $59,000.00 per year for Bull Creek in employee
salary.
Godwin Creek Golf Course
? There was no representative from Godwin Creek Golf Course at the
Authority meeting.
? The February 2002 income and expense report for Godwin Creek Golf
Course was faxed to Michael Silverstein. The report showed that Godwin Creek
had an income of $3,385.25 and expenses of $3,438.12.
Report of John Milam, Director of Golf
? Bull Creek Golf Course will lose approximately $150,000.00 for the
fiscal year 2001 ? 2002. This is about the same as last year?s loss.
? The City of Columbus has agreed to renovate the final 18 holes at
Bull Creek all at once instead of 9 holes at a time.
? The bid process for the renovation of the remaining 18 holes at Bull
Creek should be started by the middle of April 2002.
? Bull Creek Golf Course generated revenue of $58,639.74 and had
expenses of $75,272.34 for the month of February 2002.
? Oxbow Creek Golf Course generated revenue of $13,092.79 and had
expenses of $28,287.33 for the month of February 2002.
Old Business
? There has been a $30,000.00 overage in the budget for sod for the
renovation project. This was due to the fact that the contractor disturbed
more of the established fairway sod than they thought. Bull Creek Golf Course
will not pay for this additional sod.
? Larry Gaither, golf coach at Hardaway High School, has talked with
John Milam about selling sponsorships for the golf holes at Bull Creek to help
generate additional revenue for Bull Creek during the Hardaway Invitational
Golf Tournament.
? Michael Silverstein, Chairman of the Columbus Golf Authority, has
sent a letter to Larry Gaither thanking him and the parents of the Hardaway
golf team for attending the February 2002 Authority meeting to discuss the
Hardaway Invitational Golf Tournament. The letter goes on to state that Bull
Creek will lose between $8,000.00 to $10,000.00 of possible revenue for hosting
the tournament at Bull Creek and the Authority would appreciate if Coach
Gaither and the parents would go before the Columbus City Council to
acknowledge the Columbus Golf Authority and John Milam and his staff at Bull
Creek for their support of this event.
New Business
? The Asian Pacific Alliance will host the Mayor?s Cup Golf Tournament
at Bull creek Golf course on a Saturday and Sunday, which will close the West
course for most of those days. John Milam has contracted for the tournament
to host a minimum of 100 players, (so Bull Creek does not lose that much
revenue on weekend play). The Asian Pacific Alliance wants the contract to say
only 80 players. The Authority agrees that there must be at least 100 players
in this tournament.
? The Authority feels that there must be someone on the Golf Authority
to act as a liaison to The Firs Tee of Columbus to obtain accurate and up to
date business records. Donald Clack has agreed to contact Brooks Yancey,
Treasurer for Seniors for Kids, to get an audited financial year-end report and
proof of insurance.
? Authority member, Rhudine Nelson, has gotten several requests for
additional porta toilets at Oxbow Creek Golf Course. The Golf Authority will
take this matter under advisement.
Motions
? A motion was made to allow Steve Brown to reduce his full time Bull
Creek Golf Course maintenance staff from 11 members to 8 members, and hire an
additional prison guard for another prison work detail. Motion by Rannie
Lewis, second by Rhudine Nelson. The vote was unanimous by the Authority.
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:25 PM. The next
Authority meeting will be at 4:00 PM, Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at Bull Creek
Golf Course.
Respectfully submitted,
Rick Cravens
