Administrative Vehicles
The replacement criteria are 1000,000 miles and a minimum annual usage of
10,000 miles. They have an average life expectancy of 10 years.
Other Vehicles and Equipment
These include specialized vehicles and off-road heavy equipment. Replacement
criteria are based upon age miles or hours. The criteria are different for
each ?type? of vehicle or equipment. An example is a fire truck verses an
agriculture tractor. A fire truck replacement is based primarily on age due to
their low annual mileage. They can last over 20 years. A tractor, due to the
harsh conditions they operate under, will last only 8-10 years. Their
replacement is based primarily on hours of operation.
Other vehicles that fall into this category include: ambulances, inmate vans,
bulldozers, garbage trucks, recycling trucks, bucket trucks, etc.
Replacement Process
All departments submit their request to the Fleet Manager during the budget
preparation process. Vehicles must meet the replacement criteria to be
considered.
The Fleet Manager reviews the department?s request, and based upon the
vehicle/equipment age, mileage/hours, usage and operational cost, makes a
recommendation to the City Manager (Budget Committee) to replace those that are
warranted.
Vehicles and equipment are rank ordered by replacement priority to assist the
budget analysis, as well as the budget committee, to match the requests with
revenue.
