SUBJECT: Office of School Readiness Summer Lunch Program



INITIATED BY: Parks and Recreation Department

Recommendation: Authorize the City to accept funds from the Office of School

Readiness, Georgia Department of Education for administration of summer lunch

program and snacks for fiscal and school year 2002-2003.



Background: This program is designed to offer nutritious meals for low-income

children ages 18 and under.



Analysis: The Office of School Readiness, Georgia Department of Education is

funding this grant at no cost to the Department of Parks and Recreation or the

City of Columbus.



Financial Considerations: The grant amount is $456,351.00. The City is not

required to put up any matching funds to participate in this grant and funding

will be handled by reimbursement.



Recommendation/Action: Authorize a resolution to accept funds from the Office

of School Readiness and the Georgia Department of Education for the Department

of Parks and Recreation Community Schools Division to participate in the Office

of School Readiness Summer Lunch Program and annual snack program.

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY TO ACCEPT GRANT FUNDS IN THE AMOUNT

OF $456,351 TO PARTICIPATE IN THE OFFICE OF SCHOOL READINESS USDA SUMMER LUNCH

PROGRAM AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE CITY TO ACCEPT THE MUSCOGEE COUNTY SCHOOL

DISTRICT NUTRITION PROGRAM TO ACT AS VENDOR OF THE PROGRAM.



WHEREAS, when school closes for the summer, an important source of nutritious

meals for many low income children is lost. The Parks and Recreation

Department, Community Schools Division provides this Summer Lunch Program and

subsequent snack program during the summer vacation period throughout the

school and fiscal year 2002-2003 and provides meals to children who might not

otherwise receive nutritious meal; and,



WHEREAS, the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department administers the After

School Program in 42 locations throughout the city; and,



WHEREAS, no local matching funds are required.



NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:



That the City Manager is hereby authorized to accept $456,351 in grant funding

from the Office of School Readiness for the Department of Parks and Recreation,

Community Schools Division to participate in the OSR Summer Lunch Program and

subsequent snack program.
