Council Members
THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
July 22, 2004
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Chairman Donald Clack, Floyd
Washington, Richard Hagler, Willie Hill, Nancy Wilkeson, Earl Bagley and June
Holder. Rhudine Nelson had an excused absence. Staff members present were
John Milam and Steve Brown
Minutes of the June 22, 2004, meeting were approved as presented. Motion made
by Richard Hagler and seconded by June Holder.
Report of Steve Brown, Superintendent
Bull Creek had 4? of rain and that has put the mowers behind schedule.
Three-fourths of the bunkers have been reworked. The course rented an aerifier
at $600 per week to do all the greens at Bull Creek & Oxbow Creek. One-half
inch tines were used. The greens were also filled and top-dressed. We will
again rent this equipment the second week in July to aerify the greens again.
The greens will be top-dressed on a weekly basis until September. Growth
retardant has been sprayed on the fairways. Hole #13 on the West Course will
be top-dressed this Thursday. There is still some additional handwork to be
done along with eight pallets of sod to be laid this week before the opening.
The First Tee Program
Jeff Hudson stated that the First Tee Program has five sessions per year with
approximately 60-70 children in attendance per session. Jeff feels that
$30,000 to $40,00 per year is needed to run this program the way it was
designed. Godwin Creek generates little revenue from green fees. Godwin Creek
has paid most of their back bills with money received from The Steeple Chase
and the Yancey Foundation. To date, they have $569 in the bank. Mr. Hudson
promised that the authority members would get reports at future meetings.
Jeff introduced Mr. Dick Merieux who has volunteered to spearhead the fund
raising campaign so this program can survive. He comes with experience,
desire, contacts and an effort to go forth. Already, the greens have been
punched; the valve is being repaired and they are looking into repairing the
irrigation pump. Mr. Merieux suggested getting two area golf professionals
involved along with churches and the school system.
Report of John Milam, Director of Golf
Bull Creek
Bull Creek should lose about $400,000 for the fiscal year. We are expecting a
big turnaround when the West Course opens officially on July 3rd. Oxbow Creek
will lose about $150,000 for this fiscal year.
Project Update/Northern Little League Fields
The 13th green is coming in nicely and should be at 100% by the third week of
July. The city wants to delay installation of the privacy fence to see if we
really need one. The authority has requested that the city install an 8?
privacy fence now before any problems arise from the Northern Little League
fields.
On Wednesday, June 30th, the Mayor, the City Counselors and other dignitaries
along with the authority members will be able to play the West Course.
Opening day for the West Course is scheduled for Saturday, July 3rd. A ribbon
cutting ceremony will be held in late July for the West Course.
Score Cards
The authority members were shown many different styles of scorecards for the
yet to be named four 9-holes. The East Course will be re-rated soon and
results are still pending from the West Course.
New Head Marshal
Mr. James Bullock (Bull) will take over the marshal program. He will assign
shifts to sand holes, inform marshals of their duties and protect Bull Creek
assets.
A motion was made at 5:05 p.m. to adjourn by Richard Hagler and seconded by
Willie Hill.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Secretary
