RESOLUTION
NO.
WHEREAS, the Honorable Oscar D. Smith, Jr., Judge of the Muscogee County
Superior Court, died on December 17, 2003;
WHEREAS, Judge Smith retired on December 31, 1980 after serving the citizens of
Columbus and the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit with distinction for more than
18 years as Judge of City Court (now State Court) from 1962-1969 and Superior
Court from 1970-80;
WHEREAS, Judge Smith was born July 21, 1920 and graduated from Columbus High
School in 1937, from Georgia Southwestern College in 1940 and after military
service, graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1947;
WHEREAS, Judge Smith served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a
pilot in the 5th Air Force and Far East Forces, he flew 178 combat missions and
earned the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters;
WHEREAS, he also was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars,
Association of the U.S. Army, the American Bar Association, the State Bar of
Georgia and had served as Vice-President of the Columbus Lawyers Club for
1953-54 and as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church.
NOW, THEREFORE THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby convey to the family of Honorable Oscar D. Smith, Jr. our sincere
condolences and deepest sympathy. Judge Smith served his country, his
profession and the Columbus community with dedication and distinction for many
years. Let a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the family of Honorable
Oscar D. Smith, Jr.

10th day of February, 2004, and adopted at said meeting by the affirmative vote
