A RESOLUTION
NO._________
WHEREAS, The National Trust for Historic Preservation sponsors the Preservation
Development Initiative Program, designed to fund preservation-based economic
development strategies and implementation programs in Knight Communities across
the United States.
WHEREAS, The MidTown Project Steering Committee seeks through the National
Trust and the Knight Foundation professional assessments, technical assistance,
and potential long-term financial incentives, services equivalent to $80,000;
and National Trust consultants will work in conjunction with the MidTown
Project and the City of Columbus to develop a long-range comprehensive plan to
reestablish this historic, suburban area as a community; and,
WHEREAS, city employees will participate in this planning process and
ultimately this Council will review this plan and consider its incorporation
into the comprehensive plan of the City of Columbus; and,
WHEREAS, the plan will address issues in the community including land use,
commercial retail and office development, neighborhood schools, transportation
connections and safety and crime; and,
WHEREAS, the project will be guided by its steering committee, which is a
public-private partnership of city officials and representatives of various
stakeholders in the community, and the steering committee and consultants will
provide numerous opportunities for community input; and,
WHEREAS, the City will contribute toward this grant $26,050 in in-kind
services; and,
WHEREAS, the long range comprehensive plan will include quality growth
objectives such as Traditional Neighborhoods; Infill Development; Sense of
Place; Regional Identity; Historic Preservation; Environmental Protection;
Growth Preparedness; Educational Opportunities; and Local Self-Determination.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Council of the City of
Columbus support the submission of an application for the Preservation
Development Initiative Grant to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
