A Resolution requesting that the local legislative delegation to the Georgia
General Assembly repeal Section 6-102 of the Columbus Charter, which
establishes a districting commission to redraw Council district lines, with a
new joint commission empowered to recommend redistricting for both Columbus
Council districts and Muscogee County School Board education districts based
upon decennial census data.

WHEREAS, Columbus Charter Section 6-102 establishes a districting commission to
redraw Council district lines after each decennial census;
WHEREAS, the districting commission is not empowered to redraw lines for
Muscogee County School Board education districts which have existed since 1993;
WHEREAS, this Council desires that the Georgia General Assembly repeal Columbus
Charter Section 6-102 and enact new legislation creating a new joint commission
empowered to recommend redistricting for both Columbus Council districts and
Muscogee County School Board education districts based upon decennial census
data.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby request that the local legislative delegation to the Georgia General
Assembly introduce a bill which would repeal Columbus Charter Section 6-102 and
enact new legislation creating a new joint commission empowered to recommend
redistricting for both Columbus Council districts and Muscogee County School
Board education districts based upon decennial census data.
Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each member of the local
legislative delegation to the Georgia General Assembly.
