Background
On January 31, 2002 the Department of Community and Economic Development

submitted a grant proposal to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources

Wildlife Division. The primary focus of the grant proposal is to develop or

improve opportunities to observe nongame wildlife on greenspace lands and

enhance wildlife associated recreational opportunities within the county. This

grant proposal offers an excellent opportunity for the City of Columbus to

enhance the scenic view of the Chattahoochee River by providing increased

opportunities to view wildlife habitat along the Chattahoochee River. The

Program will also educate the public about wildlife and the preservation of

open space.
Analysis
The grant proposals to place benches, signage, and other low impact facilities

at strategic points along the Chattahoochee River for citizens to enjoy scenic

views.
Financial Considerations
The total requested funding is $20,000. The Columbus Consolidated Government

is expected to match 25 percent of the total project cost, which will be made

available from the general fund. The project will be for a period of 18

months.

The City Attorney has no objections to this action.

Approve the attached resolution declaring participation in the Georgia Wildlife

Recreational Grant Program.

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE COLUMBUS CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT TO PARTICIPATE IN

THE GEORGIA GREENPACE WILDLIFE RECREATIONAL GRANT PROGRAM

WHEREAS, the Columbus Consolidated Government desires to participate in the

Georgia Greenspace Wildlife Recreational Grant Program; and,

WHEREAS, the City desires to enhance the Chattahoochee River Corridor by

promoting viewing opportunities of wildlife along the Chattahoochee River; and,



WHEREAS, the City recognizes that participation in the Georgia Greenspace

Wildlife Recreational Grant Program will promote public awareness of wildlife

habitat along the Chattahoochee River; and,



WHEREAS, The Columbus Wildlife Enhancement Program requests $20,000 to place

benches, signage, and other low impact facilities at strategic points along the

Chattahoochee River for citizens to enjoy scenic views; and,



WHEREAS, The Columbus Consolidated Government agrees to match 25 percent of the

total project cost from the general fund account.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

That the City Manager is hereby authorized to accept if approved

$20,000 in grant funds from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources

Wildlife Division to participate in the Georgia Greenspace Wildlife Creation

Grant Program and to amend the Multi-Government Fund by a like amount.
