Background
-
The Wilson Camp Landfill operations began in the early 1970's and continued
until June 1983. No formal closure activities were conducted when the Landfill
closed, although soil apparently covered the landfill waste. In 1992 as part
of the acquisition of the larger Oxbow parcel of property, the City and
Columbus Water Works owns the southern-most 64 acres of the former landfill.
Satilla Communication had previously acquired the other portion on the
landfill, approximately 77 acres, at a foreclosure sale in October 1989. After
the City acquired their property, the City entered into a Consent Order with
Environmental Protection Division (EPD) and eventually closed the 64-acre
portion of the former landfill. The City will developed the property as part
of the Riverwalk/Oxbow Meadows Park.
